So, how is it going? Week 1 is typically pretty easy, as many of us have well-stocked kitchens. But now is the time to be doing preparation for the rest of the month!
So, today’s mission is to take stock of your fridge and freezer. Dig through the meats, the veggies, the condiments and make an inventory list of what you’ve got. Tomorrow we’ll take stock of our cabinets, and Friday of our pantries/storerooms. Then over the weekend we’ll make menus and research meals out of the ingredients we have. None of these exercises should take longer than 15-20 minutes!
One thing you’ll learn through these are the things you don’t eat very often. You may have stockpiled them thinking “Oh, we’ll love these!” only to find that no one’s eating them! You’ll then know to cross them off your master shopping list.
So, to announce this week’s contest! Send me the weirdest item you find! What do you have in your pantry/freezer that you didn’t know you have, or don’t remember why you bought? Best story wins a $5 gift card to Target!

I don’t think I have anything too weird (yet that i have found) just have over a 100 packages of Webber spices that I got for FREE over the summer. Can anyone tell me what I am going to do with all those spices? LOL
Also a great thing to make with all our veggies/chicken is potpie.
I have a great recipe all you do is use 2 bags of frozen veggies which ever you like I use corn and a mixed veggie, boil the chicken & cut it up use 2 cans of cream of mushroom or cream of chicken mix it all up then put puff pastry on the top cook it to the directions of the puff pastry. I love it and I am not a fan of potpie.
You can always add fresh mushrooms or anything you might like.
I found a bag with about 25 packages of Trident Xtra Care gum up on a top shelf. I got lots of extra coupons for this, thinking I could use them for an upcoming candy deal at CVS, but I accidentally got BOGO coupons instead of something else. Anyway, I asked my husband about them and told him I bought them because he said that gum was “really good.” He told me that he said the gum was terrible, it tasted like cardboard and it was our 4-year-old that said the gum was really good! Note for next time…
WOW, I guess it has been awhile since I cleaned out the freezer downstairs, or I have not been good about rotating stock– LOL. The oddest thing I have found so far is a ziploc bag that has starts of that Amish Friendship Bread. You know, the kind that you have to do something to it every day for 2 weeks……and if you forget, it makes a mess on your counter…. LOL, this is a great idea, LMKIA, but it did take me more than 20 minutes to do the fridge and freezer. I wonder what kinds of odd things I will find in the cabinets tomorrow……
That’s so funny what everyone’s finding!! I found Girl Scout cookies from…Feb 2007. And some sage/spice cake I’d bought that were supposed to be English treats from at least a year ago. Guess they weren’t so great to DH!
At least I now have some space in my freezer!
Okay, I know this may sound odd, but I cleaned out my freezer and found some frozen breast milk. Now I realize that’s not an odd thing, but the last time I froze any milk was when my son was a tiny baby (before I stopped working outside the house). He just turned 2 this summer, so I don’t think it’s usable…lol.
That’s all I found though..
Okay so I found Icy Hot wrapped in foil mixed with a roll of frozen hamburger. I’m guessing one of my lovely boys did that.
Vanessa, LOL, I think we’ve got a frontrunner!!
I hope I’m not too late to get in with two pounds of beef tripe.
Admittedly I have a *slight* advantage since I have two dogs who eat a special diet. I didn’t buy the tripe for myself, so maybe that shouldn’t count.
I’m embarassed to even admit this, but I found a half-eaten, freezer-burn-covered ice cream pie from 2 summers ago!
How about frozen cicadas (sp?). And I live in KY so we didn’t have them this year I think it was 2004. My dad used them for bait when he went fishing.
I found frozen cicadas from 2004. My dad used them for bait when he would go fishing.
hi guys, i have a really good deal- at Giant Eagle the powerade zero is 10 for $10- but when you buy 10 you automatically get $5 off - that is 10 for 5! This is a great deal but there is more! When you buy the powerade zero- you get a catalina for $4 off your next order. So if you buy 10 more and use your coupon and get 10 for $1 plus tax. As far as I know there is not a limit.
Ok, I have been looking forever at those bags of chex mix we all got for free a few months ago. It’s free, all right, but it is junk! 12 bags. What do I do with this zero-nutritional-value food? Feed the ducks in the park?
Donate that Chex mix or eekp it to take to parties. Set it out at Christmastime for snacks when people come over. Just because it’s there doens’t mean you and yours have to eat it…feed that junk to other people’s families….lol!
nushtaka, I’d take it off your hands! LOL, I missed those deals!!
You could also take it to work, open up a bag and set it out in a bowl in the break room. Your co-workers (or fellow students/researchers) will love you for it!
I think I will feed’em to my fellow students then. So many of them try to survive on $19/year, with only rent expenses topping $5k annually. I tried to “send a message” that you don’t have to make more money to have more, you just have to spend less - but I guess it takes to become a mommy to become a frequent visitor at cincymoms deals section
Hey, LMKIA, this coyf thing is really working. I am still building my stockpile, so I am trying to budget $100/week for my groceries, hba, etc. (this is 1/3 less than I used to spend). Anyway, I have already finished my shopping for the week and I still have $43 left for in case I forgot anything, and to put away for the later sales. Not to mention the $25 ecbs, $10 rr and $15 Target gift cards I have. Thanks for doing this. I am definitely seeing real results.
Good! I went to Kroger yesterday to run the Powerade deal…and found myself perusing the meat aisles, etc. I had to keep reminding myself–Not This Month! LOL!
