September Challenge!

ladyoriga.jpgI want to issue a challenge to all of my readers for the month of September–Clean out your fridge!  COYF is not a look-through-the-moldy-tupperware challenge (EWWW).  No, its a challenge to live for a month out of your refridgerator and pantry!

I know that October and November are typically big months for deals and stockpiles.  Many of us need to make room!  Not to mention, we have items we’ve stockpiled early in the year that are probably nearing their expiration date!  Or even things that have gotten buried so far back we’ve forgotten we even have them!

So here’s how it works:  for the entire month of September, you eat food only out of your pantry/fridge.  This means that if you go through your fridge and your pantry and make your meal lists out of there.  Get creative!  Got a can of beans you don’t know what to do with?  Go to google and type in the beans and a type of meat and see what recipes come back!  You won’t believe all the things you’ll try, and how long you’ll be able to survive just on what you’ve already got!

Now, as you’re cleaning out your pantry, you’ll find you’re saving some money.  Put it aside in an envelope–you’ll want it for October and November!

Rules allow for you to continue to purchase staples–milk, bread, juice, produce, etc.  But no meats until your fridge is completely empty of meat.  No sides until you’ve eaten up all options in your pantry.  No snacks, no extras until you’ve used it all up!  At the end of the month, anything left that you know you won’t eat, put it in a box and donate it to the local food pantry!  Now tidy up your shelves–there will be a lot of room for the upcoming deals!

We’ll start our challenge on Tuesday, September 2nd.  Over the next few days I’ll post  some tips to help make you successful in the challenge!  I’ll have to come up with some sort of prize for the best COYF story!

Sign up below if you’re joining the challenge!

I will try and do this too. BUT I know I can’t let my FREE’s pass me by. If something is FREE I will be going out to get it. :) This will be a good challange because I need to go through my meat and other items in the house. Great idea THANKS!!!

This is perfect timing - I really need a challenge like this this month because the budget is going to be tight. Since I’ve only been couponing a few months I am still snapping up almost every deal I come across (that we’ll use). Now if I can just put the blinders on and ignore the good deals for a few weeks…

Ladies, we’ll still get the deals…we just won’t be buying stuff for that month. Meaning…if we buy 10 boxes of cereal, they won’t be opened during September. We won’t be making grocery lists of things we need to eat–like meats–b/c we’ll be being creative and eating out of our stockpiles and pantries! So if freebies or once a year deals pop up, definitely take advantage! Just don’t buy anything specifically for USE in the month of September. Make sense?

Stop stockpiling? Now that’s just CRAZY talk! LOL!

Count me in!!! This comes at a great time–my freezer is full. :)

I’m game. My pantry is already overstuffed. It’s past time to get rid of those pine nuts and black olives. Whatever I bought them for I obviously never made it…maybe I’ll find something now.
Do any of y’all ever listen to The Splendid Table on NPR? The host will take calls from people who want to clean out their pantries or refrigerators–they’ll list what they have and she’ll try and come up with a recipe for it.

Since I just sent my oldest son off to college, I started clearing the pantry. I could’t believe how many boxes of Oatmeal I had, now he has! I love this idea, and my poor college student can benefit from it also, as I get back to the walls of the shelves.

oooh, Chris–pine nuts, black olives, maybe some capers… some sundried tomatoes in a lemony-cream sauce with some bowtie pasta tossed in the sauce. Yum!!! Or with salmon….double yum!

I’ll have to check out that show!

Pine nuts? Count me in. How about a salad with romaine lettuce, toasted pine nuts, black olives and anything else you have (jar of roasted red peppers, chicken breast, raisins?) and topped with a nice balsamic like Sturkey’s. Yum. That sounds so good right now!

I am new to this idea of couponing and stockpiling. I’ve got my deep freeze empty and thing that right now sounds like the best time to get started on this. I’ve got my binder with my baseball card sheets all ready for my coupons and I might not have a fully stocked pantry but I’m willing to go along with this too as much as I can.

I think this challenge is great. maybe I can get all those unknowns out of my freezer. Been wanting to do this for a long time!

Love your website!! My husband was telling me about seeing the “cheapest family in America” on tv. Went to a website to check it out and wasn’t impressed. However, other people’s comments led me to your site. I really needed to defrost my garage freezer and your September challenge idea gave me the motivation. I thought it was mostly venison, but as I dug deeper I found a few items I had totally forgotten about. I am working on menus for the month and doing an inventory of both my freezer and pantry. Your ideas are very helpful - keep up the good work. Thanks again!!

I am game to give this a try. I just did some grocery shopping of basics before I went on vacation so i should be able to do it. I bet I will find ways to use up the oodles of bread crumbs I have. what was i thinking???

  15. littlemissknowitall on August 30, 2008 10:11 pm

LOL! We buy those things for a reason–some recipe we just have to make! Then they sit and sit…and we forget why we have them!

That’s what makes COYF so good–we get rid of stuff that is going to waste, and we get a little more creative in the process!

well I’m going to try the challenge my deep freezer and pantry needs it any way. And that is a great idea.
